Athlacca national school was opened in 1937. Each room had a fireplace as its form of heating which had to be lit every morning before class. The toilets were in a seperate building at the end of the yard. The girls and boys were seperated by a six foot wall. This wall also divided the toilets.
The more modern school now has central heating, running water and toilets. There are four classrooms, a P.E. room and a staff room.
Athlacca playschool was located within the national school in what was the P.E. room. The playschool has now relocated into the new building which is situated between the national school and the church.
