History of Dromin-Athlacca

Dromin and Athlacca were formally two separate paishes but they joined by 1704 when William Ronan registered as parish priest (Begley's History, Diocese of Limerick). Some of the richest land in Ireland can be found in the parish of Dromin-Athlacca. In the past, part of the present day parish of Bruff called Uregare was in the parish of Dromin-Athlacca.

Dromin

Dromin is translated as Dromainn meaning a high ridge of land or the ridge. Dromin has a very drominactive calender of events both now and in the past.

Fair Green

The Fair Green which is situated beside Paddy Tierneys pub was purchased by Tady Tierney who was godfather of the present owner Paddy Tierney in 1891. During the 19th Century, thousands came here to buy and sell cattle, sheep and pigs. The last of these historical gatherings was held in December 1894.

Barganing Stone

Once a sale was agreed, the two contracting parties joined hands through the circular hole in the bargaining stone.

Creamery

A creamery was erected opposite Trinity well in 1892 by a cheshire firm Watson Brothers. It took in about 6,000 gallons of milk a day from local farmers for which they were paid two pence and three farthings per gallon. Butter at the creamery sold at eight pence per pound. This creamery closed in 1925 and the site is now private property.

Athlacca

Athlacca is translated as Ath Leacach meaning flaggy ford or flagged ford. Athlacca used to be the residence of the De Lacy family who were the landlords of the surrounding district.

In 1824 a discovery was made in the bog of Rathcannon when the complete skeleton of an Irish elk was found. The skeleton can now be seen in the national museum of Ireland.

In 1691 a battle was faught between the Irish supporters of James II and the troops of William III with victory going to the forces of William III.

In the village of Athlacca there are two pubs, a national school, a playschool and a catholic church.
